Why an elephant?
In Why People Rule the Earth: An African Folktale (Dan G. Tripps, 2024), lightning ignites a pile of branches. The author says the story draws on oral storytelling he heard in the 1970s in what was then Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo).
Neither the monkey nor the crocodile succeeds. A powerful elephant tries to stomp out the fire, but burns its fur. Only cooperation with a human named Muntu leads to success. The story highlights cooperation and the wise use of different strengths.
StompFire borrows the elephant-and-fire motif as a playful metaphor. It is not advice for fighting real fires or a claim that elephants routinely extinguish fires.
This refers to a modern book inspired, according to its author, by African oral storytelling. It does not establish one historical origin for all such tales; the game is not a literal retelling of the book.
